About

Product Overview

Wurly is AudioThing's physical modeling emulation of the Wurlitzer 200 and 200A electric pianos, instruments that defined the sound of soul, rock, and funk from the late 1960s onward. Rather than relying solely on sample playback, the plugin reconstructs the electromechanical behavior of these instruments through precise digital modeling of the reed geometry, hammer mechanics, and electrostatic pickup response. This approach captures the dynamic, touch-sensitive character of the originals in ways sample libraries struggle to achieve.

The architecture separates the signal flow into electric and mechanical sections. The electric engine models the reed vibrations and pickup transduction with control over pickup positioning and response characteristics. The mechanical section handles the physical nuances - hammer impact, key noise, pedal behavior, and the characteristic clank of the action - using both physical models and carefully captured samples to preserve authentic character. The plugin includes the Wurlitzer's famous built-in tremolo effect, along with speaker emulation derived from direct samples of the original hardware.

Controls are comprehensive without being overwhelming. Users can dial in everything from pickup geometry to envelope response, allowing significant tonal flexibility while maintaining the essential Wurlitzer voice. The dual model approach - selecting between the 200's brighter character and the 200A's warmer, more refined sound - provides useful tonal variety.

Wurly suits producers and composers seeking authentic electric piano tones with genuine playability rather than static samples. It performs well in both period-appropriate applications and modern productions where its distinctive character adds character and depth. Among Wurlitzer emulations, it stands out for prioritizing authentic electromechanical behavior over simplified approximations.
