About this plugin
Lounge Lizard EP-5 represents the current standard for vintage electric piano emulation, combining physical modeling accuracy with practical studio workflow. Applied Acoustics Systems rebuilt the synthesis engine from the ground up, implementing separate modeling architectures for tine-based instruments (Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer) and reed-based models (Hohner Clavinet). This dual-engine approach allows the plugin to capture the mechanical differences between these instrument families with genuine sonic fidelity rather than compromise.
The redesigned physical modeling core achieves convincing behavior across the entire dynamic range. Hammer strike characteristics, tine resonance, pickup response, and damper mechanics respond naturally to playing dynamics and velocity, producing the subtle tonal variations that distinguish authentic performances from generic reproductions. The onboard effects rack includes standard tools alongside less common options like a dedicated guitar amplifier, useful for adding harmonic complexity or pushing the character into more contemporary territory.

Lounge Lizard EP-5 suits producers working across jazz, soul, funk, and modern pop who demand genuine vintage tone without the maintenance headaches of hardware. It's equally valuable for rock and electronic music where classic electric piano textures carry narrative weight. The software keyboard and extensive preset browser reduce setup friction during sessions, while comprehensive parameter access rewards deep sound design.
Among comparable tools, EP-5 maintains strong positioning. It competes with Native Instruments' Vintage Electric Piano but offers more synthesis transparency. The included sound packs expand the core library with additional character variations, making the bundle a complete solution that justifies its investment for serious practitioners.
