About this plugin
Universal Audio's Ravel is a physical modeling plugin that captures the sonic character of a Steinway Model B, a 6'11" instrument favored in professional studios for its balanced, tonally cohesive output. The plugin distinguishes itself through UltraResonance technology, which addresses a persistent challenge in virtual piano design: the sympathetic vibration of undamped strings and the soundboard's complex resonant interactions. Rather than relying solely on sampling, UA's hybrid approach combines proprietary modeling with carefully captured samples to recreate how strings respond to one another as notes decay and blend.
The interface reflects a philosophy of restraint. Three mic pairs sourced from Allen Sides' collection provide different perspectives on the instrument - close, room, and balanced positions. A single slider transitions between intimate and ambient character while Volume and Tone controls handle basic shaping. This minimal approach means the plugin sounds composed and refined across genres, from pop to hip-hop, without requiring extensive tweaking to sit properly in mixes.

Ravel's primary strength lies in its mix-ready character. The Model B's inherent neutrality pairs naturally with drums, bass, and guitars without occupying excessive frequency real estate. The resonance modeling produces convincing harmonic evolution that justifies the CPU overhead compared to sample-based alternatives.
Engineers and producers seeking a modern grand piano with authentic resonant character will find Ravel compelling. It's not a historically accurate recreation but rather a contemporary interpretation optimized for contemporary production workflows. Compared to older modeling techniques and pure sample libraries, it represents a genuine sonic and practical advancement.
