About this plugin
Lounge Lizard EP-5 represents Applied Acoustics Systems' most refined interpretation of vintage electric piano emulation to date. Built on a completely redesigned physical modeling engine, the plugin convincingly captures the mechanical complexity and tonal warmth of classic Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer instruments through dual synthesis architectures optimized for tine-based and reed-based models respectively.
The core strength lies in its modeling approach: rather than relying on sample playback, EP-5 simulates the physical interactions between hammers, vibrating tines or reeds, pickups, and damping mechanisms. This delivers authentic responsiveness to dynamics and sustain characteristics that distinguish real electric pianos from static sample libraries. The onboard effects rack - including reverb, chorus, tremolo, and a newly added guitar amplifier simulation - provides legitimate studio and stage flexibility without resorting to external processing.

The interface strikes a practical balance between accessibility and deep control. A redesigned browser with search functionality makes patch selection efficient, while dedicated parameter controls for hammer behavior, pickup characteristics, and damper noise allow experienced users to dial in instrument-specific character. Microtuning support addresses niche requirements in contemporary composition.
EP-5 suits producers and performers who prioritize authentic tonal character over convenience. Session musicians will appreciate its two-decade track record and universal plugin format support. The standalone version functions as a viable performance instrument independent of DAW constraints. Compared to sample-based competitors, the modeling approach trades instant gratification for superior expressiveness and responsiveness to playing dynamics - a worthwhile tradeoff for discerning users.
