About this plugin
XLN Audio's Mark One captures the tonal DNA of a Fender Rhodes through meticulous analog documentation. Rather than modeling circuitry, the plugin operates from multi-perspective recordings of a vintage tube combo amplifier driven by the instrument itself, preserving the harmonic complexity that emerges from genuine electromechanical interaction with tube saturation.
The recording chain employed studio-standard methodology: close-proximity dynamic and ribbon microphones alongside a tube condenser captured transient definition and harmonic content, while distant room mics provided natural ambience without artificial convolution. Parallel line-level captures - both clean and processed through a Roland Dimension D chorus - offer tonal flexibility without sacrificing the core character established by the microphone array. This multi-source approach translates into genuine mixing utility; producers can dial between aggressive proximity and ambient space with surgical precision.

The sonic character sits distinctly warm with pronounced midrange and organic compression characteristics typical of Rhodes through tube amplification. The instrument excels in dense arrangements where its inherent presence cuts through without aggressive EQ, and scales beautifully from restrained jazz voicings to heavily saturated textural beds. Unlike sample-based approaches prone to repetition, the plugin's synthesis engine allows expressive control over dynamics and tone shaping while maintaining the recordings' foundational authenticity.
Mark One functions as both primary keyboard voice and supplemental textural element. Engineers seeking period-accurate Rhodes tones with genuine amplifier behavior will find it substantially more transparent than typical modeling approaches, making it particularly valuable for sessions demanding historical accuracy alongside modern production flexibility.
