About this plugin
The Electric 88 Piano captures the electromechanical character that defined a generation of pop, soul, and rock production. Waves' sampling approach prioritizes the instrument's mechanical behavior rather than pursuing clinical accuracy, resulting in a plugin that responds naturally to velocity variation and touch dynamics in ways that feel genuinely performed rather than predetermined.
The core engine delivers the characteristic bark and warmth of the Rhodes platform, with particular attention to the tine resonance and hammer strike that separate convincing emulations from sterile recreations. Control over tine character, key release behavior, and mechanical thump provides meaningful sculpting options without overwhelming the interface. The tone and formant controls allow practical adaptation to different mixing contexts, whether you're seeking the bright cut of a studio recording or the darker, compressed character of a live amplified signal.

The effects chain - tremolo, autopan, phaser, chorus, and reverb - covers the essential treatments associated with the instrument's classic applications. These aren't afterthoughts; they're voiced to complement the core sound rather than compensate for it. The amp and drive section extends utility for players seeking tasteful saturation or more aggressive character shaping, while the limiting and compression tools provide practical dynamics management without requiring external processing.
The velocity curve adjustment addresses a genuine need in virtual instrument design, allowing players to match their physical touch preferences rather than forcing adaptation to preset sensitivity profiles. This attention to feel over specification distinguishes the Electric 88 from more superficial alternatives. The plugin functions effectively both as a DAW instrument and in standalone mode, making it genuinely practical for both studio and live contexts. For producers seeking a reliable electric piano with authentic mechanical character and adequate control, this delivers genuine utility.
