About this plugin
The Electric Grand 80 captures the Yamaha CP-80, the workhorse electro-acoustic piano that defined the sound of 80s pop and R&B. Unlike its purely acoustic or fully electric predecessors, the CP-80 occupied a unique sonic territory that made it invaluable for artists from Phil Collins to Billy Joel - delivering the warmth of an acoustic instrument without the logistical burden of touring with a full grand piano.
This plugin samples the CP-80's characteristic tonal signature: a focused, polished midrange with extended low end and natural reverberant decay. The sampled engine includes mechanical detail - key release and sustain pedal noise - that grounds performances with tactile authenticity. The sustain algorithm simulates sympathetic string resonance, adding complexity that distinguishes it from synthetic pad-based alternatives.

The signal chain includes practical tone shaping via three-band EQ and formant control, allowing users to dial between mellow and aggressive character. A multi-effect section provides tremolo, autopan, chorus, phaser, and reverb, though the plugin's strength lies in its core sound rather than extensive processing. Dynamic controls including variable velocity curves and limiting ensure the instrument responds naturally across velocity ranges.
The Electric Grand 80 serves producers and engineers seeking authentic 80s aesthetic without relying on period-specific recordings. It's most effective for pop, R&B, and rock production where that particular blend of acoustic warmth and electronic sheen enhances rather than dominates a mix. Compared to purely sample-based instruments, the dynamic engine and effects integration provide sufficient flexibility for contemporary production contexts while maintaining period-accurate character.
