Klavee is Sampleson's virtual recreation of the Klaviphon, a spectral-modeled plucked electric piano from 1960s Czechoslovakia. Rather than sample playback, the plugin employs spectral modeling to capture the instrument's tonal characteristics with sufficient accuracy for practical use. This technical approach sidesteps the limitations of traditional sampling - velocity-switching artifacts and static timbre - allowing real-time tonal transformations based on the underlying harmonic structure.
The Klaviphon's sonic signature derives from wooden hammers plucking metal reeds, producing a warm, percussive tone that sits between a harpsichord and vintage electric piano. The lower register maintains classical reed resonance, while upper octaves assume a distinctive kalimba-like character due to the hammer's upward strike angle on the reed. This tonal migration across the keyboard gives the instrument considerable character without becoming precious or difficult to integrate into contemporary arrangements.
The plugin strips away unnecessary complexity. A compact 35MB footprint and standalone operation eliminate dependency on third-party sample libraries or hosts. Implementation across major DAWs is straightforward, with VST, AU, and standalone formats for both Windows and macOS.
Klavee suits producers seeking unconventional electric piano textures for contemporary composition, film scoring, or experimental work. The built-in ambient effects - drive, stereo delay - provide basic processing without overwhelming the core sound. This is a specialized tool rather than a general-purpose instrument, best deployed when its particular character serves the material rather than as a conventional piano alternative.
