Loot Audio's FELT 54 is a stereo sampled piano instrument based on a heavily modified 1975 Yamaha U3 upright. The modifications are unconventional: a 0.8mm felt strip was inserted between the hammers and strings, while two of three strings per note were muted in the middle register. These alterations intentionally suppress the bright harmonics typical of traditional upright pianos, yielding a darker, more muted character with preserved harmonic depth. The result is an instrument suited to contexts where conventional piano brightness would clash with the aesthetic.
Captured across three microphones, FELT 54 delivers a narrow, intimate stereo image that reflects close-proximity recording rather than room ambience. The 143 stereo samples span 54 notes - G1 to G6 - covering the instrument's most expressive range while avoiding the thin upper and boomy lower registers. Five velocity layers per note allow for subtle dynamic expression, while separate pedal up and down samples provide tonal variation across the sustain range.
The interface includes straightforward EQ controls, room reverb, and a tape delay module with sync capabilities. Most distinctively, a dedicated tape section offers saturation, flutter, and hiss controls, enabling users to layer period-appropriate coloration without external processing.
FELT 54 serves a specific niche effectively: ambient production, lo-fi hip-hop, and melancholic film composition. Its narrow focus and intimate character make it less versatile than general-purpose piano libraries, but substantially more intentional for producers seeking a deliberately compromised, introspective sonic palette.
