About this plugin
EastWest's Bosendorfer 290 Platinum samples one of the most refined concert grands in production, captured with meticulous attention to the instrument's characteristic tonal palette. Unlike the brighter, more assertive Steinway D, the 290 delivers a warmer, more introspective timbre that excels in both articulate passages and sustained, legato work. The sustain pedal response is particularly noteworthy - engaging the pedal reveals a seamless orchestral richness that emerges organically rather than as a sudden boost in resonance.
The sampling methodology reflects production sophistication across multiple dimensions. The engine captures 10-18 velocity layers for sustain, with pedal-down sustain and repetitions sampled across 8-12 velocities. True repetitions were sourced from 180 BPM performances, avoiding the common pitfall of relying on alternate takes. The software intelligently detects genuine repetitions, while pedal resonance is recorded at every note and velocity combination. Release samples employ an envelope follower for natural decay character.

This is a tool for producers and engineers who prioritize tonal subtlety over grandstanding. Film composers will find the 290 particularly useful for intimate cues where the Steinway might overwhelm. Jazz pianists and contemporary classical performers benefit from the responsive repetition engine and smooth soft pedal behavior. The included articulation matrix and mic position mixing provide sufficient customization without overwhelming workflow, while the streaming engine handles full polyphony without compromise. At its best, the 290 Platinum serves as a primary piano solution rather than a supplementary texture layer.
