About this plugin
The EQ PA is IK Multimedia's software emulation of a discrete op-amp based three-band equalizer that became a studio standard during the late 1960s and 70s. Built into countless custom console designs, the original hardware earned its reputation through a combination of musical proportional Q circuitry and carefully selected center frequencies that translated to exceptional results across tracking and mixing applications.
IK's digital implementation preserves the analog character while introducing practical refinements. The proportional Q design is the key differentiator here; as you increase gain, the bandwidth narrows proportionally, creating broader, more musical curves at subtle settings and sharper, more surgical cuts or boosts at higher amounts. This behavior avoids the clinical feel of fixed-Q designs and remains true to how the original hardware responded.

The interface separates frequency and gain controls for faster workflow. With 1 dB resolution across the range and 1.5 dB steps at the knob's upper throw, finding precise "sweet spot" adjustments between standard 2 dB increments becomes straightforward. The outer bands switch between peaking and shelving modes, essential for sculpting kick drum low end or extending air on vocals without losing cohesion.
The EQ PA suits engineers comfortable working with proportional Q designs who value musicality over precision. It's particularly effective on drums, guitars, and vocals where the broader curves of moderate gains complement natural tonal shaping. For those accustomed to vintage console workflows, this emulation delivers authentic character without the hardware's size or maintenance demands.
