About this plugin
Arturia's Clavinet V is a software emulation of the Hohner Clavinet D6, the electric keyboard that defined the percussive texture of 1970s funk, soul, and rock. Rather than relying on sample playback, the plugin employs physical modeling to reconstruct the instrument's hammer mechanism, string resonance, and pickup characteristics across the full keyboard range.
The plugin captures the Clavinet's distinctive sonic signature: a bright, attack-heavy timbre that sits between a harpsichord and an electric guitar, with natural string noise and pick-induced noise that cuts through dense mixes. This character comes from the instrument's unique design, where hammers strike strings and pickups capture the mechanical transients directly.

Functionally, the Clavinet V includes controls mirroring the original hardware: multiple pickup selections, EQ rocker switches for tone shaping, and a variable mute mechanism that darkens the sound while preserving articulation. The modeling engine captures string aging and wear, allowing users to dial in period-appropriate tonal degradation. A built-in amplifier section with stompbox emulations provides additional shaping options, though the core appeal lies in the modeled keyboard itself.
The plugin serves producers and keyboardists seeking authentic period textures without hardware acquisition or maintenance. It competes effectively against sample-based alternatives, offering superior responsiveness and playing feel through velocity sensitivity and dynamic string behavior. For engineers working in soul, funk, or retro-leaning pop contexts, the Clavinet V delivers a sonically convincing alternative to hardware that justifies its approach through fidelity and playability rather than nostalgia alone.
