About this plugin
TONIC is a real-time key detection plugin that leverages machine learning to identify the tonal center of audio material with notable accuracy. The analysis engine processes incoming audio and presents up to three key candidates ranked by confidence, each with a visual probability graph that reflects the certainty of the detection. This multi-key approach acknowledges a fundamental reality: many recordings genuinely contain harmonic ambiguity, and TONIC's willingness to show alternatives rather than force a single answer demonstrates genuine analytical rigor.
The plugin's architecture prioritizes practical workflow integration. A fold-out keyboard view displays only the notes and chords compatible with the detected key, functioning as both a validation tool and a learning device. Users can toggle between sharp and flat enharmonic spellings depending on preference or context. The chords mode generates sonically accurate voicings within the identified key, allowing producers to audition harmonic options without leaving the DAW.

Technical capabilities include reference tuning detection for non-standard pitch standards and an offline mode that analyzes audio before loading into sample-based instruments. MIDI control support ensures integration with hardware controllers, while native support for Intel and M1 Macs addresses current platform requirements.
TONIC serves producers working with loops, remixes, and found sound most effectively. Engineers tackling key identification in dense mixes or unfamiliar recordings will find genuine value in its multi-candidate approach. While competitive tools exist in this space, TONIC's combination of analytical transparency and practical usability distinguishes it as a straightforward, honest solution to a common production problem.
