About this plugin
Waves' Linear Phase Multiband Compressor addresses a fundamental problem in mastering: conventional multiband processors introduce phase distortion when splitting audio into frequency bands, subtly altering the character of your mix. This plugin circumvents that issue through linear-phase crossover design, which maintains phase coherence across all five bands while applying independent compression to each.
The architecture centers on five fully parametric bands with individual attack, release, and threshold controls. This granularity matters when you're managing competing instruments across the frequency spectrum. A vocalist eating into kick drum presence, for instance, can be addressed with surgical precision without affecting adjacent frequencies. The "de-masking" feature deserves particular attention - it allows you to listen to individual bands in isolation, clarifying how each region functions within the mastering chain.

Beyond standard compression, the plugin offers upward expansion and focusing-style EQ capabilities, extending its utility beyond conventional dynamic control. Automatic makeup gain and adaptive threshold settings reduce the hands-on tweaking typically required in multiband work, though experienced engineers will appreciate the full manual control available.
The linear-phase approach yields audibly cleaner results than conventional multiband processors, with transients retaining clarity and punch rather than becoming mushy or diffuse. This makes it particularly valuable for mastering work where transparency is paramount. While it carries a higher learning curve than single-band compressors, its precision and sonic integrity make it essential for mastering facilities and serious mixing engineers who demand accuracy.
