About this plugin
SSL's X-Comp represents a genuinely capable mastering-grade compressor that distinguishes itself through architectural flexibility rather than emulation of a single classic unit. The plugin implements dual symmetrical knee curves, allowing users to shape compression response from transparent to aggressive within a single interface - a design choice that sidesteps the historical limitations of modeling specific hardware topologies.
The sidechain architecture warrants particular attention. Beyond standard compression duties, the advanced sidechain enables practical workflows including multiband-style ducking, frequency-selective de-essing, and dynamic mixing applications. This isn't merely routing flexibility; it's a fundamental feature that extends the tool's utility across mastering, mixing, and restoration work.

Sonically, X-Comp delivers the hallmark SSL character - a slightly forward, controlled presentation with genuine transient definition rather than the soft-edged compression often heard in less expensive plugins. The engine handles both subtlety and aggression effectively, though users accustomed to the particular coloration of specific VCA or optical designs may find it more neutral than expected.
The interface prioritizes functional clarity. Click-and-drag parameter control, comprehensive metering, and real-time MIDI support facilitate both rapid experimentation and precise automation, though the visual feedback lacks the tactile suggestion of physical hardware.
X-Comp suits mastering engineers seeking transparent dynamic control, mixing engineers valuing flexible sidechain processing, and producers requiring a genuinely transparent compression option for surgical applications. It's competitive against comparable native tools, though the $299 price point positions it as a professional investment rather than a casual purchase.
