About this plugin
Universal Audio's SSL 4000 Series Console Bundle delivers circuit-accurate emulations of two foundational mixing tools that shaped modern recording aesthetics. The bundle comprises the SSL E Series Channel Strip and the SSL 4000 G Bus Compressor, both derived from extensive reverse-engineering of the original hardware.
The channel strip captures the sonic DNA of SSL's Type E console EQ with dual four-band configurations - the characteristic "black knob" and "brown knob" variants that defined SSL's tonal palette. The EQ sections exhibit genuine band interdependencies, producing smooth, musical tone-shaping rather than surgical precision. Beyond EQ, the strip includes high and low cut filters, a responsive gate, and VCA compression capable of everything from transparent glue to aggressive character.

The bus compressor stands as the more influential component. Its VCA topology generates the cohesive "glue" that became an industry standard, with ratio and attack characteristics that encourage musical compression rather than clinical dynamic control. The compressor's tendency to impart subtle harmonic coloration makes it equally effective on individual sources like drums or pianos.
The Native versions now support external sidechain functionality, eliminating the Apollo interface requirement for advanced mixing scenarios. Sonically, these emulations capture SSL's forward, punchy character - present-day and assertive without harshness.
Best suited for mixing engineers working across contemporary genres, the bundle excels on full mixes and individual tracks. While other compressors offer superior transparency or surgical control, none quite replicate SSL's foundational influence on commercial music production. For professionals seeking that specific vintage-yet-modern SSL aesthetic, this remains the definitive digital implementation.
