About this plugin
Universal Audio's SSL 4000 E Channel Strip models one of recording's most consequential mixing tools with meticulous attention to hardware behavior. The plugin authentically reproduces the preamp's Jensen input transformers and dbx VCA output section, capturing the nonlinear character that defined the 4000 E's presence across decades of commercial recording.
The channel strip includes both the 242 "black knob" and 001 "brown knob" four-band EQ topologies. The brown variant delivers intuitive, musically voiced sweeps ideal for rapid mixing decisions, while the black knob EQ operates with surgical precision and flatter response curves. Both incorporate the original's band interaction characteristics, which means adjacent frequency ranges influence one another in ways that reward careful listening and ear training. The implementation avoids the clinical predictability of linear EQ designs.

Dynamics processing centers on SSL's signature VCA compressor, ranging from transparent gain riding to aggressive pumping depending on ratio and attack settings. The Pre-Dyn routing option allows inserting EQ before compression, fundamentally altering tonal character. Dynamic sidechain capabilities enable frequency-dependent compression using the EQ bands as sidechain filters, a technique essential for controlling problematic resonances or emphasizing desired characteristics.
The 4000 E served on countless classical records and modern productions alike, from rock to electronic music. This plugin justifiably commands respect among experienced engineers seeking authentic analog console coloration without hardware maintenance or studio space requirements. Its sonic footprint remains unmistakable and immediately recognizable in professional mixes.
