About this plugin
Universal Audio's A-Type plugin represents a faithful emulation of the vintage multiband compressor that defined the sound of countless hit records from the 1970s and 1980s. Rather than a traditional compressor, the A-Type operates as a "compansion" processor - a multiband dynamic tool that simultaneously compresses and expands across frequency ranges, creating presence enhancement and spectral shaping that feels organic rather than surgical.
The plugin's core strength lies in its five processing modes. Air, Excite, and Expand modes deliver the transparent brightness and vocal presence heard on classic recordings by Queen, Fleetwood Mac, and The Cars. Crush mode introduces deliberate harmonic distortion for aggressive character, while Gated mode applies the percussive gating techniques popularized on 1980s drums. Each mode operates across multiple frequency bands, allowing independent dynamic processing from lows through high frequencies.

What distinguishes this emulation is the Circuit Mods panel, which transcends simple hardware recreation. Multiband gain controls, crossover adjustments, variable ratios, knee settings, and sidechain filtering provide far greater flexibility than the original hardware while maintaining its essential character. This makes the A-Type valuable both as a historical reference tool and as a modern creative processor.
The plugin suits mix engineers seeking vintage presence enhancement without the sonic artifacts of heavy EQ, producers working with vocal recordings requiring that characteristic 1980s sparkle, and mastering engineers needing surgical multiband dynamics. Among comparable tools, the A-Type occupies a unique position - neither pure mastering-grade multiband compressor nor basic enhancement plugin, but a specialized tool for specific sonic objectives rooted in documented studio history.
