Product Overview
Tone Empire's Neural Q V2 represents a meaningful advancement in neural network-based analog emulation for mixing and mastering. Rather than relying on traditional circuit modeling, the plugin employs recurrent neural networks trained on real hardware samples to capture the dynamic behavior of a vintage German equalizer paired with a modern solid-state preamp featuring CineMag transformers. This training methodology, informed by actual music material including vocals, drums, guitars, and full mixes, yields substantially more authentic analog character than conventional modeling approaches.
The plugin's straightforward interface belies sophisticated processing underneath. The Hi Band and Lo Band controls each offer 15 dB of shelving EQ in the signature curves of the original hardware, while the Pre-Amp Drive section introduces saturation across three distinct profiles: Clean, Medium, and Dirty. The drive circuit responds dynamically to input levels, encouraging aggressive pushing without algorithmic brittleness commonly found in plugin saturation.
Version 2 brings meaningful practical improvements over its predecessor, including substantially reduced CPU consumption, a retrained preamp model offering improved accuracy, window resizing capability, and completely reworked presets that better showcase the plugin's tonal range. The combination of transparent high-end extension and weighted low-end character makes Neural Q particularly effective for mastering chains, drum bus processing, and vocal enhancement.
While neural emulation technology remains relatively nascent in commercial plugins, Neural Q V2 demonstrates genuine sonic refinement. It occupies genuine territory between clinical digital EQ and character-laden analog saturation, making it a legitimate addition to professional mixing toolkits where authentic analog behavior matters and CPU budget allows.
