About this plugin
MicroToner is a MIDI-based pitch quantizer designed specifically for non-Western tuning systems. Rather than operating as a tone generator, it functions as a real-time scale converter that intercepts MIDI data and remaps pitches to user-selected tuning frameworks. This approach makes it fundamentally different from microtonal synthesizers: any instrument in your DAW - whether sample-based, synthesized, or hybrid - becomes capable of playing authentic maqam, makam, Persian, Balkan, and Indian scales without replacing your existing sound palette.
The plugin's core strength lies in its library of pre-configured traditional scales. These aren't approximations but tuning systems derived from actual performance practice, making them suitable for culturally informed composition rather than purely experimental work. The custom scale designer extends functionality for producers who need non-traditional intervals or hybrid tunings. Implementation as a MIDI filter means zero latency and seamless integration across all major DAWs.

From a technical standpoint, MicroToner handles the inherent challenges of microtonal pitch mapping elegantly. It preserves MIDI velocity, modulation, and controller data while converting only pitch information, allowing expressive performance techniques - pitch bend, vibrato, dynamics - to function naturally across microtonal intervals. Compatibility with MPE controllers is particularly valuable for generating the subtle pitch variations essential to authentic maqam performance.
MicroToner serves producers working across world music fusion, film scoring, and experimental electronic music. For those seeking genuine microtonal capabilities without hardware constraints or expensive synth ecosystems, it represents a practical bridge between standard Western tuning and global musical traditions.
