About this plugin
Steinberg's The Grand 3 represents a methodical approach to virtual piano sampling, delivering five distinct acoustic instruments with sufficient sonic differentiation to address various production contexts. The included Yamaha C7, Bösendorfer 290 Imperial, and Steinway D cover the essential concert grand territory, while the Nordiska Upright and Yamaha CP80 Electric Grand extend the palette toward period-appropriate and vintage applications.
The 30 GB sample library employs 20 velocity layers per key, which provides reasonable dynamic resolution without the computational demands of deeper sampling schemes. This architecture strikes a practical balance between expressiveness and CPU efficiency - adequate for detail-oriented playing without becoming unwieldy in typical DAW sessions.

The plugin's microphone positioning system offers genuine utility for mixing rather than superficial option layering. Engineers can dial in perspective shifts from close-miked intimacy to room-captured ambience, facilitating integration into mixed sessions without resorting to external convolution reverb. Format compatibility spans VST, AU, and AAX, eliminating platform friction for most professional workflows.
The Grand 3 occupies the pragmatic middle ground between full-featured workstations and specialized tools. It's best suited for producers and composers who need reliable, characterful pianos without chasing boutique sample sets or investing in comprehensive multi-keyboard systems. While it lacks the sonic transcendence of hands-on hardware or the technical explorations offered by more specialized competitors, it delivers consistent, musically functional results across genre applications - making it a competent default rather than a destination instrument.
