About this plugin
SSL's X-Delay positions itself as a comprehensive creative delay processor rather than a simple time-based effect. Built on the company's proprietary plug-in engine, it combines four independently configurable delay taps with extensive signal processing, creating a tool that functions equally well for subtle enhancement or dramatic textural design.
The core strength lies in its architecture. Each tap offers independent level, pan, and ping-pong routing, while a global Multiplier control enables real-time scaling of all delay times simultaneously - a particularly useful feature for automation and performance-based sound design. Tempo sync integration allows for dotted and triplet note values, facilitating polyrhythmic possibilities without manual calculation.

Signal processing depth distinguishes X-Delay from conventional delay plugins. The inclusion of SSL's saturation and modulation circuits provides harmonic coloration reminiscent of vintage hardware units, while high-pass and low-pass filters on each tap enable surgical frequency management. A dedicated de-esser and mid-side width control maintain mix clarity when stacking multiple delayed signals. The Diffusion control, which evolved from SSL's reverb technology, extends the plugin's character from tight slap-back repeats into ambient, spacious territories.
This architecture appeals primarily to producers and engineers seeking precise, creatively ambitious delay work across genres. Mix engineers will appreciate the surgical tools, while sound designers benefit from the polyrhythmic possibilities and modulation options. The saturation and diffusion circuits effectively capture vintage delay character without relying on emulation alone. X-Delay sits comfortably alongside tools like Valhalla DSP's delay offerings and Soundtoys Echo Boy, though its emphasis on creative processing and SSL's sonic signature gives it distinct positioning for professionals prioritizing both utility and character.
