About this plugin
ROLI's Strobe2 represents a thoughtful evolution of classic subtractive synthesis, grounded in the SH-101's proven oscillator architecture but substantially expanded with modern sonic possibilities. The instrument's design philosophy centers on a single, extensively featured oscillator that handles most of the heavy lifting, reducing interface complexity without sacrificing depth.
The oscillator itself justifies this singular focus through waveform faders, integrated noise generation, and hard-sync capabilities. The addition of phase-reset and key-tracking tone controls addresses real workflow limitations in vintage designs. The redesigned sub-oscillator deserves particular attention: its wider range, waveshaping circuit, and ability to decouple from the main oscillator's stacking and detuning functions provide genuine harmonic flexibility for bass design while preventing the muddiness that plagues linked sub implementations.

The filter section, featuring 22 distinct responses across classic topologies and contemporary modes, handles the essential work of timbral shaping. The gain-compensated drive circuit proves especially useful, offering saturation without the compensatory volume adjustments that undermine workflow efficiency.
Strobe2 appeals most to producers comfortable with subtractive synthesis who want authentic analog character without complex parameter sprawl. It occupies middle ground between stripped-down virtual analogues and deep modular systems. The instrument's accessible control architecture makes it suitable for quick sound design, while its oscillator depth rewards experimentation.
As an upgrade from Studio, existing users gain meaningful sonic refinement and expanded oscillator capabilities that justify the transition for serious synthesis work.
