About this plugin
Pianology is a piano modeling plugin that captures three distinct instruments through convolution sampling and physical modeling techniques: a classic American concert grand, a Japanese acoustic upright, and a vintage Japanese electric grand. Rhodes' engineering team conducted extensive preparation and voicing work on each instrument before sampling, resulting in three sonically distinct character sets that reflect genuine tonal differences rather than merely different mic placements.
The plugin's architecture prioritizes real-time expression over static sample playback. Timbre Shift provides continuous tonal manipulation across a meaningful range, allowing producers to darken a bright grand or add cut to a warm upright without resorting to EQ. Mechanical Noise control introduces variable pedal and key action artifacts, while Lid Position adjustment (on the grand) genuinely affects resonance behavior rather than serving as a cosmetic feature. Global Tune and a comprehensive effects section round out the toolkit with practical rather than decorative processing.

Pianology occupies middle ground between lightweight virtual pianos and deep sampling libraries. It excels for producers seeking authentic acoustic piano character with genuine playability rather than specialized concert grand samples or genre-specific electric piano emulations. The three-instrument focus means it's less comprehensive than some competitors but more thoughtfully curated.
The electric grand particularly stands out, offering genuine alternatives to standard Rhodes emulations without sacrificing the unmistakable character producers expect. The acoustic pianos demonstrate Rhodes' restraint in not over-processing their source material, allowing natural resonance and harmonic complexity to emerge.
Best suited for composers, producers, and session players requiring reliable, expressive piano tones that respond to nuanced playing dynamics and sustain interest across full arranging sessions.
