About this plugin
NUGEN Audio's AB Assist 2 is a comparative analysis plugin that addresses a fundamental challenge in mixing and mastering: the difficulty of making objective decisions between multiple audio sources. The tool enables engineers to audition up to four audio sources simultaneously with instantaneous switching and smooth crossfading, eliminating the cognitive biases that accumulate through repeated listening.
The plugin's core strength lies in its blind testing capability. In test mode, sources are randomly labeled, removing visual cues and assumptions from the evaluation process. This proves invaluable when assessing take selections, plug-in chain alternatives, or mastering revisions where perception often outweighs reality. The addition of surround mix comparison in version 2 extends its utility into immersive audio workflows.

Auto-level matching represents a practical technical feature that addresses a common evaluation pitfall. By matching short-term loudness across sources using LUFS metering, it prevents engineers from defaulting to louder options based on perceived quality rather than actual sonic merit. The integrated mono-check function allows rapid verification of stereo imaging decisions without external routing.
Direct plugin-to-plugin communication eliminates the latency and workflow friction of external send chains, making rapid A/B comparisons feel natural rather than cumbersome. This architecture encourages frequent comparative checks throughout the mix process.
AB Assist 2 occupies a specific but essential niche between standalone reference tools and traditional DAW mixing workflows. It's most valuable for engineers who recognize that confident decision-making depends on removing listening fatigue and confirmation bias from technical evaluation. The plugin won't improve your ears, but it will help you trust them.
