About this plugin
Entonal Studio addresses a genuine technical challenge in microtonal music production: the absence of intuitive, integrated tools for retuning synthesis in the DAW environment. Rather than forcing users through convoluted MIDI routing or external tuning tables, Node Audio's plugin functions as both a MIDI processor and VST/AU host, allowing seamless microtonality on any synthesizer without additional setup friction.
The core interface centers on a radial graph that maps pitch space intuitively. Notes are positioned by angular location and radial distance, with drag-based cent adjustment or snap-to-ratio functionality governed by prime limit constraints. This visual approach makes interval relationships immediately apparent in ways that linear cent lists cannot. The accompanying tuning lattice provides structural insight for just intonation scales, encoding harmonic relationships through geometric arrangement - perfect fifths horizontal, major thirds vertical - which helps users internalize the spatial logic of harmonic space.

The input mapping system offers genuine flexibility for keyboard control, supporting root note selection, scale degree counting, and black-note exclusion for ergonomic performance. A substantial preset library spanning just intonation, equal temperament variants, Harry Partch's 43-tone scale, and limit-based constructions provides immediate reference points without requiring manual scale construction.
Entonal Studio occupies a distinct position among microtonality tools. Unlike standalone tuning applications, its DAW integration and plugin hosting eliminate workflow interruptions. Compared to hardware-based approaches or complex Max/MSP patches, it delivers professional-grade functionality with minimal technical overhead. For composers and sound designers working with microtonal systems, it represents a meaningful efficiency gain and pedagogical asset.
