About this plugin
Reference 2 is a metering and monitoring plugin that addresses a persistent challenge in modern production: translating mixes across playback systems. Rather than attempting to correct your audio, it provides detailed spectral analysis alongside simulated playback characteristics of consumer devices and professional environments.
The plugin generates real-time frequency analysis with adjustable loudness weighting and temporal averaging, allowing producers to identify problematic resonances and imbalances before they become mix problems. Its device simulation engine models the acoustic behavior of smartphone speakers, car audio systems, and various professional monitoring setups - not through crude filtering but by analyzing how these systems typically color audio. This approach acknowledges that reference-grade monitoring remains inaccessible to most producers, making simulation a practical compromise.

Reference 2 distinguishes itself through transparent design and minimal computational overhead. The interface presents information without forcing interpretive frameworks onto your decision-making process. You receive data; how you act on it remains your responsibility. This restraint separates it from plugins that impose mixing philosophies through visual suggestion or artificial constraints.
The tool serves mastering engineers and critical-listening producers most effectively, though mix engineers benefit from occasional reference checking. Its metering precision proves particularly valuable for catching mix translation issues that informal A/B testing might miss - those subtle high-frequency buildups or sub-bass anomalies that compound across systems.
Among spectral analysis tools, Reference 2 maintains respected standing through consistent accuracy and straightforward functionality rather than feature proliferation. It occupies a distinct niche: analytical support without pretension toward being a mixing tool itself.
