About this plugin
Super Funk represents Loopmasters' entry into the saturated market of groove-oriented effects processors, and it distinguishes itself through meticulous attention to the harmonic distortion characteristics that defined classic funk records. The plugin combines multiband saturation with tempo-synced modulation, allowing producers to inject vintage compression artifacts and analog warmth into drum buses, bass tracks, or full mixes without sacrificing punch or transient definition.
The architecture centers on three primary signal paths: a tube-modeled saturation stage, a parallel compression engine with adjustable makeup gain, and an LFO-driven filter sweep that recalls the touch-sensitive wah effects common in 1970s sessions. What matters here is the implementation - the saturation algorithms appear borrowed from Loopmasters' more expensive mastering tools, providing genuine harmonic character rather than simple distortion. The compression stage includes lookahead, which proves essential when processing material already containing peak transients.

Super Funk finds its strongest application in modern hip-hop and UK garage production, where the intersection of tight rhythmic control and analog saturation has become a production staple. It performs admirably on funk and soul work, though experienced engineers will recognize that specialized mastering saturation plugins offer marginally superior transparency. Where Super Funk excels is justifying its modest price point through genuine sonic utility and reasonable CPU overhead compared to competitor offerings from Universal Audio or Soundtoys.
For engineers seeking to add movement and harmonic interest to rhythm tracks without introducing unwanted latency or stability issues, this plugin occupies a genuine sweet spot in the current landscape.
