About this plugin
Arturia's Bus EXCITER-104 is a dual-module harmonic exciter that targets the perennial challenge of adding presence and weight to dense mixes without resorting to heavy compression or EQ. The plugin splits its processing into two distinct paths: the Big Bass module, which adds fundamental richness and punch to the low end, and the Exciter section, which introduces controlled harmonic excitement across the midrange and highs. This architecture allows for surgical frequency-specific enhancement rather than the broad-stroke approach of traditional single-band exciters.
The technical implementation centers on harmonic generation and saturation tailored to each frequency region. Where competing exciters often apply a one-size-fits-all approach, the separated modules mean you can aggressively enhance kick fundamentals while applying gentler, more musicality-focused treatment to vocals or acoustic sources. The included output EQ provides a final tonal shaping layer, useful for compensating for any phase shift or ensuring the enhanced signal sits properly in your mix context.

Build quality and design reflect Arturia's plugin heritage. The large waveform visualizer offers genuine utility, letting you monitor exactly how the signal is being reshaped in real time. The 20 presets span common sources - kicks, vocals, bass, drums - though experienced users will likely find the interface responsive enough for quick custom tweaking.
For mastering engineers and mix specialists, Bus EXCITER-104 occupies practical middle ground between vintage hardware exciters and modern multiband processors. It excels on full mixes where subtle enhancement matters, though it remains equally effective as a surgical tool on individual tracks. The sweet spot is clarity-focused work where adding presence without obvious coloration is the goal.
