Product Overview
HarmonEQ from Rave Generation approaches harmonic enhancement through parallel multiband processing rather than conventional EQ methodology. The plugin generates musical saturation across three frequency ranges - low, mid, and high - each with selectable harmonic character and independent dynamics control. This architecture produces perceived presence and loudness gains without the peak level inflation typical of traditional boosting.
The core strength lies in its saturation options. Six per-band characters span from the smooth musicality of MAIN through tube-style even harmonics, transistor odd harmonics, magnetic tape compression artifacts, and a clean linear boost. This granularity allows frequency-specific tonal shaping that responds naturally to different content. A transistor mode on the high band differs meaningfully from tape saturation on the low band, enabling precision impossible with single-algorithm exciters.
The addition of per-band dynamics - expansion, compression, and transient shaping - adds envelope control without requiring separate processing. Oversampling up to 4x with Kaiser filtering maintains harmonic integrity across quality settings, crucial for transparent operation.
The De-Emphasis mode represents genuine innovation, isolating harmonic content alone by subtracting the clean EQ component. This enables subtle enhancement on conservative mixing chains where obvious coloration would be problematic. Dual stereo and mid-side modes accommodate both tracking and mastering workflows.
HarmonEQ suits mixing engineers seeking musical loudness without excessive dynamics, mastering professionals needing transparent presence enhancement, and producers working with thin or fatiguing sources. Against comparable exciters, its multiband saturation options and dynamics integration provide more surgical control than single-character alternatives, positioning it as a serious alternative to traditional harmonic enhancement tools rather than a boutique novelty.
