About

Product Overview

FabFilter Simplon is a streamlined filter plugin that strips the modulation matrix and effects stack of its parent Volcano 2 down to essential filtering tools. What remains is a dual-filter architecture where each multimode filter operates independently across low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass modes with selectable slopes up to 48 dB/octave. The filters can be cascaded in series for steeper cutoff curves or run in parallel for more complex resonant topologies.

The sonic signature sets Simplon apart from clinical surgical filters. These filters self-oscillate smoothly across their full resonance range, and FabFilter's engineering ensures they sound organic rather than sterile even when pushed to harmonic saturation. Three selectable filter characteristics define the tonal character of each filter, ranging from smooth and controlled to raw and aggressive. Combined with the response and slope options, this yields up to 27 distinct filter configurations, giving producers meaningful tonal variety without overwhelming complexity.

The interactive dual-filter display is genuinely useful, allowing real-time curve visualization and direct dragging manipulation of both filters simultaneously or independently. Automation works sample-accurately across all parameters, and the plugin includes FabFilter's trademark implementation details: vertical and circular drag modes for precise knob control, MIDI Learn, and Smart Parameter Interpolation for smooth transitions.

Simplon targets producers and engineers who need high-quality multimode filtering without the architectural complexity of Volcano 3. It's particularly suitable for mixing tasks, creative sound design within reasonable scope, and situations where modulation sources and distortion stages would add unnecessary workflow overhead. For filter-centric mixing or sound design requiring extensive modulation, Volcano 3 remains the more capable option.
