About this plugin
Arturia's Filter MS-20 is a capable emulation of the Korg MS-20's signal processor section, delivered as a stereo effect plugin using their TAE modeling technology. The tool reproduces the characteristic resonant filter and distortion circuitry that defined the synthesizer's aggressive sonic signature, making it a legitimate choice for producers seeking that particular flavor of vintage analog processing.
The plugin's core strength lies in its filter design. Users can dial in anything from subtle tonal coloration through extreme resonant sweeps, with the modulation capabilities supporting both static and time-variant processing. The distortion section operates independently, allowing either subtle harmonic enrichment or deliberate destruction depending on the source material and intent. In stereo mode, the plugin widens the processed signal noticeably, which can be useful for adding dimension to thin sources but requires careful gain staging to avoid phase issues.

Filter MS-20 works best on individual tracks rather than broad mix bus processing. Bass and drums respond predictably to its character, while melodic sources and vocals demand more restraint. The interface prioritizes immediate access via primary knobs, with deeper parameters available for sound design exploration. This approach suits producers who value quick decisiveness over deep parameter diving.
Compared to similar vintage filter emulations, Filter MS-20 occupies a middle ground - more aggressively voiced than general-purpose filters, less specialized than dedicated MS-20 recreations. It delivers authentic harmonic character without requiring deep synthesis knowledge, making it appropriate for mixing engineers and sound designers approaching the MS-20 sonic palette for the first time.
