About this plugin
EFx REFRACT is Arturia's stereo multi-effect built on a foundation of unison-based voice multiplication, a proven technique for adding presence and width to sources that need character. The plugin duplicates incoming audio across up to eight stereo voices, each capable of independent filtering and modulation, creating a dense, dispersed sound field that sits somewhere between a chorus effect and a full orchestral arrangement.
The architecture proves particularly effective for sources lacking inherent complexity. A thin vocal, sparse synth line, or isolated drum element gains immediate dimensionality through the voice spreading alone. Subtle pitch and phase differences between duplicated voices generate the richness typically associated with ensemble processing or vintage tape saturation, though with precise, digital control.

Secondary effects - selectable from distortion, delay, texture, and transition modules - layer onto this foundation, allowing users to craft anything from subtle enhancement to dramatic sonic transformation. The animated visual interface responds to parameter changes in real time, making the signal flow intuitive to follow and adjust.
REFRACT occupies useful middle ground between simple saturation and full-featured multi-band processors. It excels at rescue work on weak recordings and shaping synth sources, though the fixed voice count may feel limiting for certain surgical applications. The preset library demonstrates genuine sonic range, suggesting the developers understand both subtle and aggressive use cases.
For producers working within DAW limitations or seeking instant width without multiband complexity, REFRACT delivers measurable results with minimal CPU overhead. Its strength lies not in novelty but in executing a fundamental technique exceptionally well.
