CineHarpsichord is a meticulously sampled recreation of a Franco-Flemish harpsichord, recorded at MGM's legendary Scoring Stage with multiple microphone perspectives. The instrument captures the characteristic brightness and percussive attack of a 1624 Iohannes Rückers Colmar harpsichord, complete with authentic stop controls including dual 8-foot choirs, a 4-foot register, and buff stop for tonal variation.
The library's technical approach addresses the harpsichord's inherent recording challenges. Cinesamples time-aligned close microphones with room and surround channels to eliminate the phasing artifacts that typically plague percussive instruments with multiple mic distances. This careful engineering ensures clean blending across mix perspectives without sacrificing proximity detail.
Three distinct mix patches provide different sonic characters. The primary CineHarpsichord patch offers traditional FULL, CLOSE, ROOM, and SURROUND options with custom blending via Tim's Mix preset. The Baroque patch delivers an ambient character with subtle close-mic coloration for period scoring work. The Vintage patch applies tape emulation and outboard analog processing, including Chandler EQ and tube distortion, for warmer, more integrated modern production use.
A Perspective Mode feature allows real-time crossfading between microphone positions via modulation wheel, providing dynamic depth control during performance. This proves particularly valuable for filmscoring applications where spatial movement enhances scene dynamics.
CineHarpsichord serves composers, orchestrators, and sound designers requiring authentic harpsichord character with production flexibility. Its recorded source material and thoughtful mixing approach make it suitable for both period-accurate scoring and contemporary contexts where vintage character enhances arrangements.
