About this plugin
The VEQ-1P is Black Rooster Audio's circuit-accurate emulation of the Pultec EQP-1A, the tube-driven program equalizer that defined the sound of countless classic recordings. Rather than employing convolution or simple DSP modeling, the plugin uses real-time SPICE simulation to authentically capture the analog circuit's behavior across its entire signal path - from the passive filter network through the audio transformers to the tube amplifier stages.
The VEQ-1P's defining characteristic is its simultaneous boost and cut capability at shelving frequencies. This interactive filter design allows users to brighten the high end while simultaneously reducing harshness, or add low-end weight while maintaining clarity - musical solutions that conventional EQs struggle to achieve. The so-called "Pultec trick" of boosting around 7kHz while cutting at 5kHz has become essential technique for drum processing, bass definition, and vocal transparency.

The implementation deserves attention. SSE2-optimized DSP and auto-adjusted oversampling preserve transparency across sample rates while maintaining reasonable CPU efficiency. Linear phase Dolph-Chebyshev filtering effectively eliminates aliasing artifacts without excessive latency penalties.
The VEQ-1P appeals primarily to mastering engineers and mix specialists accustomed to analog compression and EQ, though any producer comfortable with subtle, musical equalization will benefit from its sonic character. It occupies a distinctive position among Pultec emulations - not the cheapest option, but one of the most sonically faithful implementations available. For those seeking the specific tonal signature and workflow that made the hardware unit indispensable to generations of engineers, the VEQ-1P delivers authentic results.
