About this plugin
Universal Audio's Hitsville EQ Collection provides software emulations of the graphic and mastering equalizers that defined Motown's signature sound during the label's peak years. The plugin set comprises two distinct tools: a seven-band graphic EQ modeled after the custom units used across Hitsville's tracking sessions, and a mid-side mastering EQ based on the rare disk mastering hardware that shaped the label's final mixes.
The graphic EQ operates with fixed center frequencies across the audible spectrum, allowing straightforward tonal shaping without the surgical precision of parametric design. This constraint, inherited from the original hardware, encourages decisive mixing decisions and imparts a cohesive character across tracks. The mastering EQ introduces the "Motown Filters" - specialized frequency curves and half-speed settings that compressed midrange energy while extending highs and lows, producing the punchy yet warm aesthetic associated with classic Motown singles.

The collection targets producers and engineers seeking authentic vintage color rather than clinical correction. Hitsville's emulations prove particularly effective on vocals and drums, where the graphic EQ's fixed frequencies complement natural instrument resonances. The mastering EQ excels at the final mix stage, adding polish and presence without the transparency of modern linear-phase designs.
Developed with input from the original Hitsville engineers and officially licensed by the studio, these emulations stand apart from generic vintage EQ recreations through genuine hardware measurement and validation. Available in both Native and Apollo versions, the Hitsville EQ Collection bridges the gap between historical accuracy and modern production workflows, making the label's foundational sound accessible to contemporary sessions.
