About this plugin
Audiority's Heavy Pedal mkII is a circuit-accurate emulation of the BOSS HM-2, the high-gain distortion pedal that became synonymous with Swedish death metal and extreme music production. Based on analysis of a 1984 Japanese unit, this plugin delivers the characteristic compressed, saturated aggression that defined an era of metal guitar tone.
The plugin's architecture centers on independent tone controls for low and high frequencies, distortion amount, and output level. The addition of pre and post-effect gain staging allows for nuanced input/output management, while a selectable noise gate addresses the inherent noise floor of the original pedal's circuit behavior. The inclusion of nine different circuit type variations provides flexibility beyond a strict one-to-one reproduction, accommodating different signal chain scenarios and source material characteristics.

Sonically, the Heavy Pedal mkII excels at delivering dense, midrange-focused distortion with substantial harmonic coloration. The effect lends itself particularly well to guitars requiring significant gain with tonal definition rather than pure sustain, making it valuable for dense rhythm work, bass guitar processing, and synth textures requiring gritty saturation.
The plugin stands distinctly from transparent distortion tools and modern high-gain emulations. Rather than pursuing clinical accuracy or pristine fidelity, it embraces the colorations and limitations of its source hardware, making it an essential tool for engineers seeking period-appropriate heavy music aesthetics or those requiring the specific harmonic signature the original pedal established in metal production. The resizable interface and deep parameter control make it a practical addition to both mixing and performance contexts.
