About this plugin
Applied Acoustics Systems' Ultra Analog VA-3 represents a meaningful refinement of their established virtual analog platform, warranting consideration for existing VA-2 and VA-1 owners. The upgrade centers on two significant structural improvements: a streamlined two-voice multitimbral architecture and a fundamentally redesigned interface centered on performance-oriented macros.
The sonic engine retains the characteristically clean, transparent approach that has defined Ultra Analog across generations, with subtractive synthesis that responds predictably to modulation and parameter sweeps. The addition of stacked and split voice modes provides practical flexibility for contemporary production contexts, enabling textural complexity without requiring multiple instances.

The interface redesign prioritizes real-time control. Four user-assignable macros per layer map to modulation, timbre, envelope, and effect characteristics, each responding to MIDI learn assignments. This represents a departure from menu-diving paradigms toward hands-on performance control. The Home view reduces visual clutter, presenting essential parameters without sacrificing deeper editing access.
The 560-sound factory library, curated by established sound designers including Richard Devine and Jerry Kovarsky, demonstrates solid sonic direction. The legacy library of 648 remastered VA-2 sounds underwent significant recalibration for consistency and unity-gain effects, acknowledging the real-world workflow reality that many producers maintain extensive existing patch collections.
Ultra Analog VA-3 positions itself as a capable, workmanlike synthesizer suited to producers prioritizing stability and creative immediacy over experimental sound design. Whether this upgrade justifies migration depends primarily on your existing workflow's reliance on real-time macro control and multitimbral layering.
