About this plugin
Soft Limit is a dynamics processor that models the soft-clipping behavior found in Apogee's hardware interfaces since the AD 500. Rather than operating as a traditional threshold-based limiter, it functions as a gentle saturation tool that progressively compresses peaks while maintaining musical character across the dynamic range. This approach distinguishes it from brick-wall limiters that can introduce audible artifacts at the threshold.
The plugin's core strength lies in its ability to add cohesion and presence without obvious compression. At conservative settings, Soft Limit tightens transients and glues elements together through subtle gain reduction. Pushing the Drive parameter introduces harmonic distortion that thickens instruments while still protecting against clipping. This versatility makes it equally effective on individual tracks - drums particularly benefit from the crunch it imparts - and on master bus duties where its transparent limiting prevents overages without pumping.

The oversampling options (4x, 8x, 16x) provide flexibility for CPU management and sonic preference, with higher rates reducing aliasing artifacts. Automakeup Gain handles level compensation across different Drive settings, streamlining workflow. Metering options for mono and stereo sources support both mixing and mastering applications.
Soft Limit occupies practical middle ground in the saturation landscape. It's neither a transparent utility nor an aggressive coloration tool, making it useful for engineers seeking control between those poles. While specialized tools may outperform it in extreme applications, its combination of practical limiting and musical saturation justifies inclusion in most mixing chains.
