SSL X-Limit is a mastering-grade limiter designed to handle the dual challenge of loudness maximization and peak protection without sacrificing musicality. The plugin distinguishes itself through four distinct processing modes - Transparent, Glue, Punch, and Auto - each with independently optimized attack and release characteristics. Transparent mode operates with minimal coloration, making it ideal for catching transient peaks on vocals or acoustic material. Glue mode introduces gentle compression-like cohesion, while Punch mode aggressively shapes drum buses and submixes. The Auto mode intelligently adjusts ballistics based on incoming transient density, offering a practical set-and-forget solution for mixed material.

The interface centers on a waveform visualization with linked threshold and ceiling controls, allowing real-time assessment of limiting activity against the source signal. SSL's True Peak algorithm adheres to ITU-R BS.1770 standards, preventing inter-sample clipping that linear peak metering can miss.
