About this plugin
The X902 is a VCA-based de-esser that addresses one of mixing's most persistent challenges: controlling sibilance and high-frequency artifacts without degrading vocal intelligibility or instrument definition. Based on a respected 1980s studio module, this plugin employs frequency-selective dynamic reduction to target problem areas with surgical precision while maintaining transparent operation across the frequency spectrum.
The plugin's architecture centers on three core parameters. The threshold sets the level at which reduction engages, the frequency control pinpoints the offending content, and the range determines reduction depth. This straightforward approach masks considerable sophistication in execution. The VCA modeling preserves the smooth, musical character of the original hardware - reduction feels natural rather than aggressive, a quality that matters considerably when working with vocal takes where over-processing becomes immediately apparent.

What distinguishes the X902 from broader EQ-based solutions is its dynamic operation. Rather than statically attenuating a frequency band, it responds only when sibilance peaks exceed the threshold, preserving natural articulation during normal phonetic passages. This selectivity proves invaluable for sources like cymbal-heavy drum mixes where static EQ would compromise brightness across the entire performance.
The plugin includes both high-frequencies-only and audition modes. The former isolates the detection band for focused listening, while audition mode lets engineers hear exactly what the de-esser targets before committing to reduction. These workflow features, combined with native plugin convenience, make the X902 practical for both mixing and mastering applications.
