About this plugin
Baby Audio's Smooth Operator Pro represents a meaningful evolution in spectral balancing, moving beyond the streamlined simplicity of the original toward a genuinely surgical tool for tonal correction and shaping. The fundamental approach remains intact: dynamic spectral processing that targets problematic frequency energy rather than applying broad-stroke EQ, but the Pro version adds substantial depth without sacrificing the workflow efficiency that defined version one.
The core advancement lies in per-node control. Where the original Smooth Operator applied global settings across the spectrum, Pro allows independent dynamic profiles at each frequency node. This means addressing a harsh 7.5 kHz peak in cymbals while simultaneously cleaning up 150 Hz mud in the bass, each with its own compression characteristics, within a single instance. The implementation justifies the upgrade path for users who found themselves reaching for additional instances or combining tools to achieve nuanced corrections.

Sonically, Smooth Operator Pro maintains the clarity-focused character of its predecessor while adding two distinct algorithms - Even and Skew - that provide tonal flexibility. The resonance suppression feels transparent when dialed conservatively, functioning less like aggressive compression and more like intelligent mud removal. The instant track optimizer remains valuable for quick diagnosis, though experienced engineers will likely spend time in deeper controls to sculpt specific problem areas.
This upgrade sits between straightforward surgical EQ and full spectral workstations, making it most valuable for mixing engineers working across genres where problem frequencies demand individual attention. Four years of refinement show in the execution.
