About this plugin
Smooth Operator Pro is Baby Audio's refined take on dynamic spectral balancing, a category that has gained traction among engineers seeking surgical frequency control without the workflow friction of traditional multiband compression. The plugin splits incoming audio into frequency components, then applies dynamic processing tailored to problem areas, effectively reducing masking and tonal imbalance while preserving the integrity of untouched frequency ranges.
What distinguishes Smooth Operator Pro is its node-based architecture. Rather than applying a single compression curve across the spectrum, users can establish individual dynamic profiles at specific frequencies - targeting harshness at 7.5 kHz independently from bass muddiness at 150 Hz, all within one instance. This granularity approaches surgical precision while maintaining accessibility through a global threshold control for quick decisions.

The plugin ships with two correction algorithms - Even and Skew - each with different tonal characteristics. Even delivers transparent thinning, while Skew leans toward musicality. Mid/side processing capabilities extend utility for stereo sources, particularly effective on drums and cymbals where side-channel harshness frequently dominates.
Smooth Operator Pro appeals to mixing engineers handling challenging source material, particularly vocals and drums where frequency-specific issues demand attention without resorting to aggressive EQ. It's equally valuable on full mixes as a clarifying stage before limiting. The four years of feedback incorporated into the Pro iteration have yielded substantive improvements in sound quality and parameter flexibility over the original.
Among spectral balancers, Smooth Operator Pro occupies the sweet spot between accessibility and depth, offering serious control without demanding steep learning curves.
