About this plugin
Antelope Audio's VMEQ-5 is a focused three-band equalizer engineered for surgical work in the midrange spectrum where most mixing problems actually live. Based on a 1961 hardware classic that remained a studio staple for six decades, this plugin concentrates its design philosophy on the 300 Hz to 5 kHz region - the frequencies where vocals sit, guitars compete, and clarity issues become immediately audible to the human ear.
The architecture is deliberately minimal: two overlapping peak bands and a single dip band. This constraint is the plugin's strength. Rather than offering endless parameterization, the VMEQ-5 forces intentional mixing decisions. Each band operates independently with separate boost and cut controls, allowing users to shape problem frequencies without fighting interaction between controls. The sonic character leans toward the slightly saturated, forgiving quality of vintage analog circuitry, adding presence and definition rather than clinical precision.

The plugin excels on individual sources - particularly vocals, guitars, and woodwind instruments - where midrange muddiness or harshness needs targeted attention. It's equally effective across full mixes when the collective midrange has become opaque. Engineers working in rock, pop, and acoustic music will find it particularly useful for restoring clarity without resorting to broader EQ moves.
Available in native and Synergy Core variants, the VMEQ-5 represents a practical philosophy: that exceptional work often requires fewer tools, not more. For those seeking authentic vintage character without the vintage price tag, it delivers measurable results in a streamlined package.
