About this plugin
Antelope Audio's NEU-W495 is a three-band mastering equalizer modeled after a legendary 1970s German broadcast console module. The plugin captures both the technical precision and sonic character that made the original hardware a cornerstone in mastering facilities and broadcast operations throughout Europe for decades.
The EQ's architecture centers on switchable frequency points for each band, giving you discrete sonic targets rather than continuous sweeping. This design reflects the original's broadcast heritage - built to meet exacting standards while maintaining consistency across multiple channels. The proportional-Q behavior responds smoothly to boost and cut, tightening naturally as you increase gain rather than maintaining fixed bandwidth. This translates to surgical adjustments that never sound clinical.

Sonically, NEU-W495 trades the aggression of some vintage EQs for transparency paired with genuine analog warmth. The low end carries weight without bloat, while the high-frequency response opens up mixes with definition rather than harshness. Phase distortion remains extremely low throughout the audio range, crucial for mastering work where subtle degradation compounds across playback systems.
The plugin suits mix bus polishing and final mastering moves, though experienced engineers will find it equally valuable on individual tracks needing cohesive tonal refinement. Its gentle character works well for sources already well-recorded, enhancing rather than correcting. Both native and Synergy Core versions maintain the original's channel-matching characteristics, essential when working across stereo pairs.
Among mastering-grade plugins, NEU-W495 occupies a middle ground between transparent ISO EQs and colored vintage designs - musical enough to shape character, neutral enough to preserve source integrity.
