About this plugin
Antelope Audio's digital emulation of the 1073 three-band EQ captures the sonic signature of an instrument that defined the sound of professional recording studios for five decades. Originally designed by Brent Averill Enterprises in the early 1970s, the hardware 1073 became the standard British console EQ, appearing on everything from Thriller to Born to Run. This plugin models that legacy with meticulous attention to the original unit's behavior and character.
The architecture centers on three fixed frequency bands - high pass, band pass, and low pass - each with its own tonal personality. The high pass filter excels at removing low-frequency rumble and room spill without introducing phase artifacts, while the band pass mode operates as a full parametric mid-range control. The low pass section adds the weight and presence boost that makes the 1073 particularly effective on vocals and drums. Unlike clinical EQs that simply attenuate or boost, the BAE-1073 imparts a subtle harmonic richness that engineers describe as musical coloration rather than surgical correction.

The plugin's strength lies in its restraint. Rather than overwhelming sources with obvious character, it sits transparently on tracks while adding the grit and dimensionality associated with vintage British console design. This makes it equally valuable during tracking and mixing stages.
For producers and engineers seeking the classic 1073 sound without investing in rare and expensive hardware, this emulation represents genuine sonic fidelity. It's essential for those working with vocals and drums, though its versatility across sources explains its enduring studio dominance.
