About this plugin
The Tack Piano from Wavesfactory is a meticulously sampled Kontakt instrument that captures the distinctive percussive character of a prepared upright piano with thumb-tacks embedded in the hammers. This sonic approach, popularized by recordings at Abbey Road Studios and featured prominently in indie and alternative music, produces a bright, metallic attack that sits somewhere between traditional piano and dulcimer.
The instrument is built on comprehensive sampling methodology: eight velocity layers and six round-robin variations ensure natural expression and eliminate machine-gun repetition during rapid passages. Three independently recordable microphone perspectives - close proximity condensers above the hammers, mid-distance dynamic mics positioned below the keys, and room mics capturing ambient character - provide genuine mixing flexibility. The inclusion of a fourth pre-mixed option streamlines workflow for those seeking faster integration.

The redesigned interface prioritizes accessibility without sacrificing depth. A full mixer allows real-time blending of microphone positions, enabling users to dial in anything from intimate, percussive intimacy to spacious, resonant ambience. This three-channel architecture makes the instrument equally effective for contemporary composition, vintage-influenced production, and experimental sound design applications.
Wavesfactory's approach here represents considerable advancement over earlier prepared piano libraries. Complete resampling from scratch and enhanced round-robin implementation result in authentic articulation across the velocity range. While the Tack Piano requires full Kontakt 5.7.3 or later, the investment yields an instrument that stands apart in a relatively sparse category, providing genuine utility for producers and engineers seeking authentic prepared piano character without compromise.
