About this plugin
Waves' X-Hum addresses a problem that persists across virtually every professional studio: electrical interference and sub-bass contamination. Ground loops, transformer proximity, and mechanical rumble can degrade headroom and muddy mixes, particularly in the critical low-frequency range. X-Hum tackles these issues with surgical precision through a combination of notch filtering and high-pass processing.
The plugin's core strength lies in its eight tuned notch filters, each capable of attenuation down to - 60 dB. This architecture handles both 50 Hz and 60 Hz mains hum alongside their harmonics, making it effective across different regional power standards. The tuning is specific enough to target interference without affecting adjacent musical content. For broader issues, the integrated high-pass filter offers both 12 dB/octave and 24 dB/octave slopes, providing flexible rumble control while preserving bass integrity when properly calibrated.

X-Hum distinguishes itself through its DC offset removal capability, which reclaims headroom at inaudible frequencies without collapsing the low end - a common pitfall of blunt high-pass filtering. The ability to link or unlink filter parameters across channels streamlines workflow in stereo or surround scenarios, while factory presets cover common problematic scenarios.
The plugin operates at zero latency with minimal CPU consumption, making it appropriate for both tracking and mixing. X-Hum occupies a specific niche rather than offering broad corrective coloration. For engineers dealing with chronic hum issues or working in less-than-ideal electrical environments, it's a focused, technical solution that delivers measurable improvements without introducing artifacts or degrading mix balance.
