About this plugin
Waves' WNS Noise Suppressor addresses a persistent challenge in vocal recording: reducing environmental noise without sacrificing the natural character of the performance. Rather than attempting surgical removal of discrete noise elements, the plugin employs a 6-band dynamic EQ architecture to suppress broadband noise across the frequency spectrum while preserving vocal intelligibility and presence.
The technical approach prioritizes transparency. The engine analyzes incoming audio and applies gentle, frequency-selective gain reduction to push background elements below the vocal level, effectively improving signal-to-noise ratio without the artifacts common to more aggressive gate or spectral subtraction methods. This makes it particularly effective for dialog, voiceover, and vocal-heavy productions where maintaining natural tone matters more than achieving clinically quiet recordings.

The interface includes an algorithmic "Suggest" button that analyzes input material and proposes initial settings, a helpful starting point that experienced users can refine through the adjustable band controls. The visual feedback display aids in real-time monitoring and tweaking during both tracking and mixing sessions.
WNS occupies a practical middle ground in Waves' noise reduction lineup, sitting between their more aggressive surgical tools and basic gate-based solutions. It works competently on untreated spaces, outdoor recordings, and leakage issues. The light CPU footprint and real-time operation make it suitable for both mixing and tracking applications. While not designed for extreme noise situations, its gentle sonic character and straightforward workflow make it a reliable choice for producers working with less-than-ideal recording conditions.
