About this plugin
The NS1 Noise Suppressor is Waves' entry-level noise reduction plugin, designed to address a specific workflow problem: removing unwanted background noise from dialogue, voiceovers, and instrumental recordings without requiring deep technical knowledge or extensive parameter tweaking. Unlike more granular noise reduction tools, NS1 operates on a single-slider paradigm, using real-time spectral analysis to identify and suppress broadband noise sources while preserving the target audio's tonal integrity.
The plugin's technical approach relies on adaptive gating and spectral subtraction, which means it responds dynamically to changing noise floors rather than applying fixed reduction across the frequency spectrum. This makes it particularly effective for handling room tone, HVAC hum, computer fan noise, and other constant-state backgrounds that plague location recording and home studio sessions.

NS1's single control represents either a strength or limitation depending on your perspective. For dialogue and voiceover work, where speed and simplicity matter more than surgical precision, it excels. Users typically achieve usable results within seconds. The integrated metering display provides visual feedback on active noise reduction, which can help determine optimal threshold settings without guesswork.
Among competing products at this price point and complexity level, NS1 occupies a middle ground between basic gate-based solutions and professional-grade spectral editors like RX. It won't replace detailed restoration work, but it handles common recording problems effectively and immediately. Best suited for video professionals, podcasters, and producers who prioritize workflow efficiency over meticulous sound design, NS1 delivers practical noise suppression without specialist training.
